The Highland Tactical FOXTROT Backpack

By Kevin Quinn  @kqconsulting

When I received my Highland Tactical Foxtrot Backpack and took it out of the box, my first thought was that this looks just like all the other black tactical backpacks out there.  Once I started getting into it, I will admit that I was wrong.  I realized that this backpack was really put together well with enough pockets for everyday use but not too many where you lose track of where you put things.

I then took everything out of my current everyday (Non-Tactical) backpack made by a major company and started to find spots for all my stuff.  There was more than enough room for everything!  In my current position where conducting training and attending meetings and classes on a regular basis is the norm, I carry my laptop with me wherever I go.  The pouch to put my computer in is padded on the back but nothing more than thin vinyl on the inside.  I would love to have a Velcro enclosure or something similar for that pocket since it carries such an important piece of equipment.

The small pockets on the front of the pack are perfect for what I use them for.  The top compartment is lined with very soft TRICOT which is perfect for my sunglasses when I go inside a building.

The next small pocket is where I keep no less than the following items with me at all times should I need them for a training:  6’ HDMI cable, 3 phone charging cords, audio cable, projector adapter and several thumb drives.  The two side pockets are perfect for storing a few water bottles, and here in Arizona everyone always has water with them!  The front pocket as a zippered inner pocket that is perfect for pens, markers, etc.  The large main pocket is absolutely huge!  I have carried my laptop, 3 padfilios, a 3 ring binder and an extra pair of boots all at the same time with room to spare.

The shoulder straps are padded and make the bag extremely comfortable to carry for extended periods of time.  The top handle is very sturdy and secure which allows the backpack to carried like a traditional bag with one hand with no worries.

I really like the Laser Cut MOLLE along the front of the pack, it makes it look a bit subdued so it’s not as obvious that this is a “Tactical” bag.  The two Velcro patch holders on the front allow for you to personalize your pack with your own patches to show off your individuality.

The FOXTROT comes in 4 different color schemes to meet everyone’s needs:  Desert Coyote, Green Digi Camo, Dark Green Olive Drab and of course Black.

From the Highland Tactical website:

The FOXTROT 3 day pack has it all! It pulls everything you are looking for together in a 3 day pack. Its size allows heavy loading and customization to keep you on the trail. The hook and loop patch holders allow you to personalize the look of your pack to make it your own. After carrying the FOXTROT as my everyday bag for the past couple of months, it is still in as great of shape as it was the day I took it out of the package.  This will continue to be my everyday work pack until such a time that I find something better, which will be hard to do.

Summary:

Cost – List price is $74.99 for the Highland Tactical FOXTROT Backpack.  Less expensive than other major companies backpacks.  You can find less expensive “Off-Brands” as well but you get what you pay for.   5

Comfort – The padded shoulder straps are extremely comfortable and make carrying the pack for extended periods of time easy.  5

Durability – As I already mentioned, this backpack still looks brand new and the zippers are working flawlessly.  I can’t wait to see how this pack holds up after several more months or years!  5

Functionality – The FOXTROT has enough room for everything that I have thrown at it so far.  It keeps all my daily gear and then some, organized and in place for whenever I need to access it.  I would like to see the laptop pouch be a little more secure with some extra padding and maybe a closure strap or something.   4

Weight – Very lightweight for the size and durability.  5

Overall rating – 24/25.  The Highland Tactical FOXTROT Backpack has turned out to be an awesome pack for me and my daily needs.  It also worked out well when I had to throw some extra stuff in it for special details.  I highly recommend this pack for anyone looking for a “Tactical” bag for everyday use.
